Dana 44 TTB drain plug location?
Nope, the TTB Dana 44 does not have a drain plug or diff cover. The two ways to change the gear oil is to either suck the old fluid out of the fill hole (easier) or to pull the third member out completely (preferred). If you decide to pull the third member, drill and tap a hole in the boss on the bottom for a drain plug and clean out all the shavings before reinstaling the diff. If you go ahead with installing a drain plug, make sure you locate it far enough back so that the plug will clear the lower lip of the axle beam.

Dana 44 TTB drain plug location?
Thanks for all the great tips. Putting a drain plug in sounds like a good idea when I get to taking it apart.
One last question: My repair manual says that the Dana 44 diff takes a different lube than my Ford rear. It lists the Ford rear diff as requiring Hypoid gear lubricant, and the Dana front requiring Gear oil. What is the difference?

Dana 44 TTB drain plug location?
Yah, mon...I was so busy congratulating m'self on how sharp I was when I sucessfully overhauled the '84 TTB now residing in my '91, that I forgot to add that drain plug!
And I was soooo smart...I even added a zerk fitting at the slip yoke at the center U-joint!
Now I 'm gonna have to pull the whole thing apart again to drain the break-in oil! (Betcha it leaks!)
I'll add that drain plug, though...
