I came across this quick video today and it looks promising for eliminating some play in the steering system. I thought I would post this to get some other opinions on whether this is worthwhile or not. The fourth reply? on this video sounds viable also. What do you think about the video idea? Thanks Sandy
I'm going outside right now, and checking that, since I have a problem with loose wheel syndrome, and not wanting to change out the steering box.
Back in a moment.
I tried the "beverage can" shims once, but they did not stay in place very well, for me. I also tried foil tape, to build up a little thickness, but that stuff was too soft and didn't last very long. I like the feeler gauge shims as I think that should be a pretty durable material. I ultimately ended up replacing my intermediate steering shaft with a new Ford part, but that was because I wasn't smart enough to figure out the feeler gauge shim thing. I think that this area should be addressed before replacing steering boxes and other parts, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc., that don't show obvious wear. When you see the slop in the nesting shafts, it becomes quite apparent where a significant portion of the system play comes from.

Well said! Makes me think what am I waiting for. I agree it doesn't seem we have a lot to lose. I'll let you know how it turns out for me I'm going to do it. Thanks for your encouragement. Sandy
