Good morning folks. After an inspection on my part and a local manual trans and T-case only shop, looks like my issues with going into 1st and reverse are most likely my clutch and pilot bearing(IIRC).
that said, he recommended luk for an OEM replacement. What would y’all go for and what else should I replace while im at it, or have a shop do (ill be asking around for quotes, he recommended two shops as he’s backed out a ways)?
ive heard I should replace the flywheel too, should I? If so with what brand and other parts?
If I'm just looking for stock replacement, yeah LUK is usually a pretty safe call. I generally put centerforce clutches in anything I plan on keeping, but they're not cheap. I've never regretted their clutches, but again, not cheap.
I'm with SFaulken. The LUK clutches are good enough for a stock replacement. Typically whatever stock replacement you can get from O'Reilly or Car Quest is good enough. I swapped my '89 over to a Centerforce Dual Friction and really like it, but that's overkill for a stock motor.
Replace the flywheel. Any regular parts store one will work.

Is there anything I need to do along with the flywheel? Bolts? Snap rings? Etc?
any specialty tool I need besides a torque wrench?
The Luk Repset in my offroader has a good feel. I personally wouldn't replace the flywheel if it isn't warped or damaged; you could get yours inspected and resurfaced if you're worried about it.

Thats a fair point. Just depends on cost difference between a shop doing the work and me.
if its like the first trans shop I called to get their thoughts, $4k in total to rebuild my ZF. Thats why Im leary about letting someone else do it

Just a question about where parts are located on the small block ZF,
release bearing (bearings???) how hard is this to get to when replacing the clutch?
slave cylinder, mine is internal unfortunately so is that do-able or would I need a full disassemble to replace it? I have one, might get a new because its been sitting in packaging for two years now when I replaced the master cylinder.
I figure I will get the luk clutch kit and luk flywheel plus the release bearing(s?), snag a rear main seal if its easy to do in that particular timeframe.
You have to pull the transmission to do the clutch, so the slave cylinder and release bearing are fully accessible. When they say "internal" slave cylinder, they mean it is inside the bellhousing, not inside the transmission.
