Been working on a 1978 F150 with a 351w and the t18 4 speed. Just got the truck driving after sitting and it shifted fine the first few days but the transmission is not working quite right since then. I can take off in granny low and reverse works good as well. It will also shift into 1st usually but after that I try to shift to second and the stick will go fully into the right spot/gate but the gear won’t catch if that makes any sense, as I’ll hit the rpms up and the truck just goes the same speed or slows down. Double clutching or floating do not seem to help and the trans does not grind at all. My guess is shift forks or synchros but don’t have much experience so would take advice if you have any. Was wondering if the synchros or shift forks could be replaced through the access cover or if the transmission needs to be pulled for that.
Not 100% on a T18, but if it is like a NP 435 1st gear is non synchronized and you have to be at a DEAD stop to get it in 1st, or ground a lb. In fact I never take off in 1st (like in DD, red light, town driving) with my NP435 trucks. Granny 1st is for pulling Chevy's off wet grass. 4wd Low 1st gear is for pulling 2 cheby's at once....off wet grass..... downhill to the scrap yard. X2 on I would go thru a complete clutch adjustment before I start replacing parts. 1st to 2nd is NOT a speed shift process either.
I replaced my T18 not long ago. It was acting similar. The first symptom I noticed was it didn't feel like third gear fully engaged. Then sometimes it would fall out of third if I compression braked. The shift fork pads were worn out, and the sychro's were just about shot too. Pretty much everything in the transmission needed replacing. I had no idea how nicely a T18 shifts until I installed the new one.
Ok. That was about what I was thinking as I adjusted the clutch a couple time but it didn’t seem to help. What rebuild kit did you end up using on yours and was it a fairly straightforward process getting it rebuilt?

It was a very straight forward process. I gave Novak my credit card info, they built me a transmission and shipped it to me. Sorry, I couldn't pass on that one.
I briefly looked into rebuilding it myself. I don't remember specifics, but it wasn't gonna save me a lot of money. And there's no way I could have done as good of a job as Novak does.
There's just gears in there its a pretty straight forward rebuild put all gears and new brass in just like you took it out ,I never did one but it wasnt that bad and now I can say I rebuilt one.
If it's an NP435 it doesn't have brass it has stop rings . the ones Novak and everyone else sells are dog chit. I have a NP453 that was pretty nice until I had the kit put in now it shifts like crap after 2 sets of made in India stop rings. so it sets on the floor and a good used one went back in.
Syncros or stop rings effect how it shifts but they don't effect if it moves or not. if you do rebuild it and your stop rings aren't shot I'd reuse them. if they are shot good luck.
