Hard start

Please help! I’ve got an 04 Excursion 6.0 that’s been bulletproofed. I just bought it back in April because it fits all of my kids. When I first bought it it was running amazing. Last month it started doing a hard start, it would take three or four long cranks to get it to turn over (only when it had been sitting for a while). The truck has the FASS fuel system, and I replaced the fuel filters thinking that was the problem, sadly it was not. The pump is running and functioning perfectly. I replaced the starter, still hard start. I’ve since taken it to a diesel mechanic shop, and things went down the toilet from there. $2k later it’s now running worse. They first replaced the ICP sensor, that didn’t help and now it has a hard start even when it’s warm. Then they did a pressure test to the high pressure oil system and found a few internal leaks. They fixed those but then I lost 50% of my power and still a hard start. Then they replaced the high oil pressure module, that made everything worse! The hard start is worse, and now when I’m driving on the highway it randomly sputters really hard and keeps dying. I let it sit for 11 hours and drove it again. Still a hard start but ran great for about 20 minutes then started sputtering again but not as bad as before. I love this truck but I need it running since it’s a daily driver. Any help will be much appreciated!

Do you have a way to monitor the system? Such as Forscan or Torque Pro? There are a few things that at it could be, but we need data. There has been work done on it so it could now be multiple things more than the original problem.
The monitoring systems I mentioned above are fairly cheap and easy to access, they will give you codes and read vitals onyour motor. You can go up in the tech folder and read about most common problems.

I do not have those. I do have an SCT programmer that also reads codes.

Dang, this is a sad post. SYK, that wasn't a diesel shop you took your truck to, doesn't even sound like a mechanic. Just someone throwing parts at the problem hoping one fixes it.

Yeah, you're going to need a good code reader. IDK how well the SCT works for that - I'd definitely believe any codes it does pull, but I wouldn't swear that there were others it missed. Forscan is only a few dollar download for your phone, and the OBDII wireless connector is maybe $30. But, the SCT can get you started, if it pulls some codes. It doesn't seem likely that there won't be codes with those symptoms, and no one here can help you much without the codes and live data monitoring - we'd be no better than that shady tech you took it to.

SCT is not good at retrieving codes.

What is the high oil pressure module? Do you have a picture or part number?

I will look into that scanner thanks. It’s what they told me they replaced that cost $900. To be honest I don’t know much about diesels, this is my first one.

I can't imagine what it was unless it was the FICM (which is NOT a high oil pressure module). The FICM is the Fuel Injection Control Module and would cost about $900. It would help us help you to know what it actually was.

WTH? That is not the high pressure oil pump. And doesn't look like any IPR I've ever seen. No way that cost $900, even with labor.

They are also telling me the screen is missing somewhere inside my oil system because it can easily fall off and it fell off before they replaced it. And that is why I’m having the stuttering even though it was running great before just the hard start. When I first brought it in I thought it was just the glow plugs. But everything they have done has made it worse. Now I don’t have my daily driver, and no clue what to do or how to fix this.

They said it was the module not the pump.

There's not such part as a high pressure oil module. The part that has a screen is the IPR valve, which kinda looks like that pic you attached. The screen can come off, but it's probably still in the hole - you have to get a pick or similar to get them out when they do that. It would be strange for the screen to get into the oil pan - the high pressure oil is pushing it the opposite direction.

Geezus, you should never go back to that tech again. I think he's messed up your truck. Next, he's going to tell you the fuel pump is overfilling the gas tank.
