So I just did a cluster swap from an 86 with a tach. Basically i moved all my guages over from my current 80 cluster to the new one cuz I knew everything worked. (Eccept my charge now but that's ok) so before my temp gauge would get between the R and M , thermostat would open and then come back and settle between the O and R. I cleaned all my contact points before I swapped everything over. Now on cold start the next morning my temp went to the M before the thermostat opened but now it's sitting at the tip of the N after warmup just sitting at idle.
I'm just curious if this is a normal thing? Maybe since I cleaned all the contacts it's reading more accurate?
I havent replaced the thermostat yet so I donno what temp range it has in it currently but it's never sat this low.
yes I was VERY carefull when removing and installing
most people on here will tell you to get an aftermarket gauge that will tell you actual temp. With that being said, mine usually stays around there as well.

No, I don't consider that normal, it's acting like the wire leading to the sending unit (R/W or W/R, I forget which) is partially grounded someplace.
You are not supposed to be worried about it till it gets over to the "H". That is what the factory manual says correct? Can you believe we are actually having this conversation? I am a aftermarket gauge guy. You know, the ones that have numbers on them.

Ok? factory gauges that function properly are athletically pleasing. I plan on getting aftermarket gauges just wasn't on the top of my priority list
Yep mine is also there 300 six with AC and 192* stat.
The only time I have seen it getup a little higher it was mid 90's out side, had the AC on high sitting in a parking lot waiting for my son.
Once I got moving the temp came right down.

So, since the swap, are you now operating on the IVCR that was with your gauges previously, or the one from the other cluster?
These are notoriously inconsistent even undisturbed.....but if you have mixed & matched, it would be highly likely to have your gauges reading differently to before.

Correct I just swapped parts. did a little googling and found that the regulator may be going bad. And that they just snap onto the circuit. So I'll have to swap over my old one and see if that fixes it.
