I've got a 93 4.9l and was wondering what the normal operating temperature range is supposed to be? I have a mechanical gauge installed and today it climbed up to just over 220. I was driving up a steep logging road, so the engine was working pretty good but I wasn't going very fast. Is that an alright temp in that sort of driving situation? Driving down the highway or around town looks fine, it's usually just below 190.
If you have a 195* thermostat you are ok. 220 constantly is to high and your oil life is short. Considering you were going uphill and slow (less air flow) 220 would probably be expected in the summer. If you run over 195* under normal driving conditions the thermostat is suspect.and should be addressed.
It's a pressurized cooling system, seeing temps like 220 when you're working the engine hard is perfectly normal, and they should come back down when you get back to less "stressful" driving. If they don't, thats when you need to start looking at potential issues.
I built a temperature gauge using a Arduino Nano, factory ECU temp sender and 7 seg LED display. gauge, I do have the 195F tstat and when Fla was cooler(winter) ,temp gauge was right at 195F now my 89 F250 runs 200F with AC on and under 60mph with temps up to 206F at 70mph+
It is interesting watching the temp drop when T-stat opens till radiator is fully warmed up. After that it goes to 200 then drops back down to 195~198
I also see the same thing on my 95 E350 with a mechanical gauge, which will be swapped out with another Arduino Nano temp gauge as mechanical gauge is not as responsive to sudden changes.

Been looking into this for mine to add a screen got a guide on how you've done this.
There were a few more I looked at, but those two sites will give you a good guide. So far 2 years later I had no issues with that temp gauge sitting on the dash. Except for the plastic box I used melted from summer heat. LOL
