I have a 1979 / 351M (big block bell housing). About a year ago we pulled the trans out to replace the front main seal and the transfer case seals. In the process, it got dropped and cracked the bell housing. I’ve had no luck finding any transmissions online, and neither of the two shops here will try to fix it. I miss my Bronco, but I’m not sure where to go from here. Did Ford put the big block C6 in any other trucks? Would it be worth trying to pull out of another truck?
Plenty of F250/350 trucks have the 460 and C6 combination. The key is to get one with the same drivetrain to make this easier. You can probably find some 70s era sedans with that combination as well.
You could also post your question in the 73-79 truck section, as there is tremendous interchangeability with the trucks and 2nd gen Broncos. A lot of knowledge in the Dentside forum- both how to and where to find stuff. Good luck in your quest.
Where is "around here"? C6s seem to be pretty cheap and available in general. I had to give a core away a few years ago because I couldn't sell it for $25 locally and didn't want to ship.
Any competent welding shop should be able to weld it as long as the crack is not into the internals of the trans. Any 385 series C-6 will work but if not from a 4x4 you might have to change rear output shaft, and put yours in.
There are lots of big block C-6 4x4 trany cores for sale on Ebay. As someone has already said a competent welder should be able to fix the crack. However if your old trans is ready for rebuild maybe a core would be better.
