Used Oil Analysis Reports

Wanted to share my UOA reports here with the group, for better or worse, I am a short change type of person with new engines. First report 1069 miles on oil (oil dumped + new filter), as expected higher levels of Aluminum, Iron, and Copper than universal averages, Lead was just a little high. Second report 2753 miles on oil (oil dumped + new filter), as expected still slightly high levels of Aluminum and Copper, Iron really dropped off, Lead is now within normal range. I plan on running this third fill of oil around 5000 miles, oil dump + new filter, and do another report. Enjoy, Philip. Edited on 10/17/22 to add report with 5000 mile oil change interval, 8800 total miles. Next oil change interval will be 7500 miles, regardless of time. Edited on 10/14/23 to add report with 7500 mile oil change interval, 16339 total miles. Edit on 5/28/25 to add report with 23952 total miles.

Thanks for the info, if you don’t mind me asking, why 5w40 over 5w30?

Just personal choice, been using this weight for nearly 20 years in nearly everything I own with good results. Philip.

The oil police will tell you it's wrong, but it's SN certified as well as CJ-4. I'll probably use T6.

Have you done any towing with it using 5w40? I’m curious how it affected your MPG? Also, it would be hard for the oil police to argue against manufacturers recommendations, SAE 5w40 is listed as recommended for serve service. I’m looking at towing a trailer across country next year so I will switch to 5w40 when I do.

Just checked the owners manual, 5/30 is recommended and 0/30 for cold environments. Only mention of 5/40 is for the 6.7.

Yes. Used 5w-40 since the 1000 mile mark in my 2004 F-250 5,4, and since the 1000 mile mark in my 2021 F-350 7.3. Trailers weighed between 3K and 12K. The trailer weight affects the mpg more than the oil weight, so that would be difficult to say. Obviously the 40w will yield slightly lower efficiency than the 30w, probably a small percentage, but with all the variables of how I drive, I am not sure if I can measure the difference. Philip.

The oils of today are pretty robust. 7,500 mlie oil changes is a good #. My 2012 6.2 oil changes were always 7-8000 intervals and it went to a new owner with 212,000 miles and it used no oilin between changes.

My 2021 intervals have been 8-9000 miles with a good oil report at 92k miles. Truck has 122,600 miles now and figure sometime in the beginning of the new year I'll do another oil report. Truck should have another 10,000 miles on it.

I use it in ALL my air cooled engines. Just a little more protection in my mind.
