Oil usage between changes

Ihave a 2000 F-250 psd that I purchased used with 18,500 miles on it. I have since done all my own oil changes every 3,000-4,000 miles using Valvoline Premium Blue oil and a Napa oil filter. I take out about 11-12 quarts and put back 14 new quarts of oil. Is this excessive oil consumption? There are no leaks and the pressure indicated on the gauge is good, although I realize that is not telling me much.

Thanks for your input.

Oil usage between changes

My truck is a '00, with 55K, and I take out about about 13.5 - 14 quarts of Rotella 15W-40 at 5K miles, and put 14.5 - 15 back in. I use the FL-1995 filter. Only 11 quarts out at 3K-4K seems like a significant oil loss to me, but I am no expert. Is that counting the almost 2 quarts in the filter?

I am sure others here will provide their opinions.........

Yes that does include the oil in the filter. My truck is at 53,000 miles currently.

Try different oil maker, never did like valoline. Do you use your vehicle for daily heavy towing? Try 15w 40 good oil and you'll see a difference. good luck.

I was told that the Valvoline was good. It is a 15W/40 endorsed by Cummins. I tow a 17' bass boat once a month but nowhere need a load for the truck.

I change my oil (Rotella) every 5000 miles. With a Motocraft FL 1995 filter. I have 106000 miles on her.I use no oil between changes. I will use a quart a so if I'm hauling a load across country. (car trailer with vehicle).

Mine never use any oil, but some do.

From the bottom of the "full" range to the top of the "full" range on the dipstick is 2 quarts. If you start out at the top mark and don't get below the bottom mark between oil changes, you are OK.

If you have to add oil to keep it above the bottom mark, you are using a little too much oil.

Does your oil level slowly go down, or does it stay topped off and after a few thousand miles start going down.If it stays up when the oil is new and starts using after a while thats telling you your oil is done and needs changing. I'd try a different brand. I had a simuler thing going on in a old 6.9 and a trucker buddy told me to map my usage and sure enough it start using way more oil near the end of the oil cycle. Switched oil and it went much further before it started using. He said to forget about basing oil changes on just milage but rather also usage which reflects how hard the motor worked during the oil cycle. When you get near the add line dump the oil. Write or wrong I do not know but it made sense to me.

powerstrokes often use oil. If it is not smoking, leaking or otherwise telling a tale, there is no problem.

I am about to embark on an oil adventure myself very shortly - as soon as the heat goes down a bit, this week, I am fitting a nice shiny dual remote filter system on my '96.. I will be doing analysis regularly, so I will post the results....

Mine used about 2 quarts between oil changes (4000 mile interval) during the first 25000 miles, but since then it does not burn a drop. Others have had oil consumption up to their first 75000 miles. Just like eckart said, map your oil usage.

I use Delo 15W-40 in mine, and change it every 3500 miles. I put in 14 qts, and after 2000 miles, I add another quart to bring it back up to the "full" line on the dipstick. Technically, since I'm not down to the "add" mark, I could continue to run without adding anything, but I think there's a benefit to having it topped off.

I had a 2000 that used oil (brand new) about 1-2 quarts between oil changes. (3500 miles).

My 2002 seems not to use any oil. I never add between oil changes(3000 miles).

I too use Delo 15w-40. I change my oil every 3000 - 4000 miles when I'm towing the 5th wheel, and 4000 - 5000 miles when not towing. I use less than 1 quart either way. Used a little more than a quart between oil changes when it was new, but the consumption is less now that I have 65,000 mile on her. Like Quadzilla I keep it topped off all the time.
