When scheduled for production. Have to call and ask. Either your dealer or Ford marketing.

I ordered on 5/6/21, have never received an email directly from Ford regarding the order. I received an email from the dealer on 6/4/21, giving me a VIN and a production week of 7/26/21. I haven't received anything else, and do not have a specific production day yet.
My dealer provided my vin...Got my vin about a month after making the order at the dealership...BUT these are not usual circumstances these days. I would suggest in the mean time you confirm your build is exactly what you want in your truck. I decided to change gears about a week after my vin was issued, the change went through but you dont have a lot of time once the vin is issued. Congrats and have extraordinary patients these days. It will be worth the wait.
My order was picked up the week after the dealer submitted it. I had the VIN when the order was picked up, but had to email the dealer to get it. They (a small dealership) said they don't get many requests for that info, so they don't bother emailing it out unless it's requested.
While I am not an expert in the exact details of orders, this is my understanding of things after my 2017 F350 order.
The dealer where you ordered your truck is the contact point for the order. While it is possible to phone FORD marketing at points and get information, the dealer is the place to go for information on your order. You are purchasing the vehicle from them.
When you order, a good dealership will give you a copy of the order. You are then able to check the order, to make sure it is what you want. FORD will notify the dealer in short order that they have accepted the order. This is more formality but important. That the dealership has actually sent the order to FORD and is now awaiting scheduling.
When FORD schedules the vehicle, they will notify the dealership of the VIN and the build week. If your vehicle has not been scheduled, then there will be no VIN or build week.
A good dealership will notify their customer of this development, but it is certainly not a given that they will notify their customer. Like many on here, I asked my dealership and they provided the information. I did phone FORD marketing several times for updates after I received the VIN.
After the truck was built, I was able to inquire of my dealership of the location/status of the vehicle and they would send me the screen shot of this information.
In the time since my truck build, FORD has an online information portal, window sticker access, etc.
Remember, when we talk about a lack of information, this is usually a dealership issue, not a FORD issue. Although with the issues regarding the chip shortage, FORD has not been very helpful to their customers regarding what is happening to their orders.
