1992 F150 won’t start when hot?

Hey everyone I’m new to this forum but have browsed it for a long time, I have a 1992 f150 flareside 5.0 that has been acting up. I bought the truck about a year ago and have been through a ton of things and replaced a lot of sensors and parts on it since it was abused before. Now, whenever I’m driving it for a while and stop somewhere and shut it off, it won’t start back up. We replaced the starter because it won’t even turn over when it’s warm, and thought that solved it till it got warm and then won’t start again. We replaced the ECT in the intake manifold which didn’t help, so I was wondering where the location of the actual Temperature sending unit is so we can replace that? Another reason we think it is probably the sending unit is because the temp gauge always reads low. I’ve heard different answers from everyone and no solid answer yet. Any help would be appreciated, or any other ideas as to why it’s doing this.

When it is warm and will not turn over, try pulling the coil wire off and see if it will turn over then. If so, your initial timing is too far advanced. If it will not, and you have already replaced your starter, I would suspect bad battery cables and/or bad ground to block.

So…. What did you replace? The one wire sending unit by cylinder #5 is only for the gauge. The temperature sensor for the computer has two wires and is located by the thermostat.

If there is a sensor out of range the computer may have set a code for it. Have you performed the KOEO self test?

How low is low? If it is at the low end by the NO of NORMAL then that is fine. Take the wire at the sensor and ground it out. The needle should peg on the HOT side of the gauge. If it does not then the wiring or gauge is bad.
