Lifetime fluid?

Lifetime fluid?
I recently took my 2014 Explorer Limited 4x4 with the 3.5L non turbo engine in to the shop to have the transfer case and rear differential fluids changed out. A short time later they called me back saying both only had drain plugs and were lifetime fluids that could not be exchanged. Is this true? Thanks.
