I've got better things to spend money on than a new spare tire that's going to sit under the pickup for the next 20 years. My spare is the original 17-in wheel and tire that came with the pickup. it's definitely smaller than 35s that are on there now but I've never had it on either.
Flats used to be more common. If you have traction lock rear you will need a spare the same diameter as your other tires, and if towing a load you need same weight rating to support load. Thank you for a memory jog, my spare is now 9 years old and I should look for replacement. Changing a tire is one thing but buying a tire 1000 miles from home is another.

Like he said the load rating you want to match & same size tires as on truck as most of us are running 2 sizes or larger on our trucks.
I know for a fact you can fit a 285/75 under on my old 03 spare tire spot just barely, but it does fit.
I actually just had mine replaced as it was the original & 18 years of rubbing on the spare tire rack didn't leave me feeling reassured.
I called up my local tire store & asked for a customer take off/ used tire & ended up getting it for like 40$ mounted and balanced.

Assuming you never haul/tow very far away from home especially after normal business hours.
I typically when ever I change tires, I take the best tire I'm taking off and swap it to my spare. This typically keeps with a spare that's only 3 to 4 years old. I also don't worry about the wheel for my spare but after my last trip through KC and getting a flat on my Coopers (piece of Flint through the center of the tread) found I needed a new set anyway.
The spare was a TOYO, same size and rating but was over 8 years old.
I do need to drop the spare and do some cleaning and preservation as I've been neglectful.
Bought my current (4) wheels used way down the road I’ll buy 5 matching ones new. It’s nice to have 5 tires in rotation.
this has been a good reminder. I need to check my 24 F250 Lariat spare. Would like them all to match for additional life a 5 tire rotation provides in addition to the benefit of a same sized tire should I have a flat.
