The Dark Side

Okay, so I am convinced I don't need a diesel anymore, and my truck is 21 years old and still kicking butt. We don't plan on going much bigger than our current 5th wheel, which 30" long and under 10k lbs max. We like to boondock rather RV park it.
I've been thinking that the 7.3 gasser would do the trick, but maybe even the 6.2 with 4.30s and the 10 speed (4x4)?
So here is my question;
How many here have decided to go to the new 7.3 instead of the 6.2 and why?

I believe the majority take the 7.3 over the 6.2 in the F-350 platform. Only trucks I see with the 6.2 are XL trucks in the F-350.

If you're looking to buy/order now the 7.3 would be the way to go. Torque is lower in power band which is always a plus. MPG's maybe al little better unloaded. I'd probably go 4.30 with the 7.3 but the 3.73 might way me if it was a daily driver.

When I ordered mine the 6.2 it was the only gas they had in 2017. I couldn't wait a couple years so I have what I have. I've thought about trading up to a 7.3 but I doubt I will anytime soon and if I do I'll go back to a dually. We pull a GD Reflection 337RLS and it pulls fine. Even at max weight of 14K. You just have to let'r rev but that doesn't bother me at all like it does some others.

Good luck in your search.

We’re on our fifth truck in 35 years, all with gas V8’s, 4x2, and limited-slip or locking rear diffs. Our 2019 F-350 has the 6.2, six-speed AT, and the 4.30 axle.

This configuration has worked well for our needs. We carry heavy, but rarely tow heavy (does towing a two-axle car trailer carrying an old Wagoneer count?), and most driving is at lower elevations.

We do like RVing in the Rockies, but our normally-aspirated 6.2 sometimes struggles at higher elevations (above ~6K feet). If we lived out there, we’d have a turbo Diesel or the 7.3, the latter with the 4.30 axle, and probably 4x4.

Note that Ford improved the 6.2 starting with MY2017. Compared to the 2011-2016 version, it develops higher peak torque at lower RPM’s.

I’m starting to believe that at some point, enough is enough. Our 1986 Suburban — which we drove through the Eisenhower Tunnel in CO — was fitted with the 5.7, but our 2019 6.2 can generate >50% more torque and >140% more horsepower.

HTH,
Jim / crewzer

Forgot to mention...live at 5k feet and tow past 10k feet. The psd does great in those conditions as long as I watch the EGTs. If my old 7.3 had a 10 speed, it would be heaven.
I'm in no hurry to buy given the lack of parts, the seller market these days and my truck is running great.
So I was thinking, why not get a gently used 6.2 lariat and supercharge it for those tough climbs and still be thousands less than a new 7.3, and outpull it along the way...
Anybody here supercharge their 6.2 tow vehicle? If so, does this kill the legendary reliability of it?
Just spit ballin' here, lol

a conservative tune on the 6.2 with a whipple would be fine. maybe 6-7 psi. there is atleast 1 guy in one of the facebook groups that has completed a whipple install and tows regularly with it. Another guy i know of has a whipple and livernois cams swap done. he has been working on getting the tune sorted out.

Good to know, thanks Akley88.
So it sounds like maybe the 6.2 would be pushing it for towing at high elevation...all the youtube vids I've seen show towing a trailer, not at 5th wheel for some reason.

part of that might be due to the weight of the 5th wheels and people just jump to the diesel. ive seen gassers pull 5th wheels. I vote deepest gears if towing with a gasser in higher elevation.

does he run 92 octane or 87?? I've been thinking 4 psi whipple and 87 octane would be the ticket

it was either 91 or 93. but he is also running the standard pulley which is supposed to make about 9 psi.

Yeah, something on the mild side to make up for high elevation without stressing the power train too much. Lower rpm torque would be nice also.

personal opinion... I would buy a diesel if I was always at 5k and towing to 10k, those altitudes just need forced induction.

I live at 200ft and tow to 4k but I am only towing 7k travel trailer and rarely a 7 - 10k car trailer. That being said I also re-geared my 2014 pickup to the 4.56 gears and run 33's on it, I average 11.5mpg around town and just made a run from albany, or to vancouver, wa and i was doing 68 the whole way and averaged 12.5.

I dont think I would ever buy this pickup again without the better gears, I dont daily drive that much and honestly my mpg's didnt change that much when I did re-gear. My only regret is when I re-geared... was not to just spend the other 600$ and have them put either an E-locker or detroit in the front end at the same time.. Would have made this picked even more of a beast.
