Transmission Kickdown

1985 F150 302 with a C5.

I just want to confirm that I am okay to drive it without the kickdown lever hooked up for a bit? From my understanding it was only completely necessary on the AOD transmissions. Just got the engine and transmission back in the truck and I am scheduled for exhaust next week. I have ordered the spring and perch kit that will work with my new Demon carb setup but I don't know if it will be here in time. The good news is that the kickdown lever seems to fit in there just fine. I had ordered an extension for it from Holley that I thought I needed but now I don't think so. Anybody else have experience with the street demon carb and a C5? Would like to know if you used an extension on the lever or not.

I do know that I need this exhaust done soon, a guy can only handle open headers for so long haha.

As long as the kickdown linkage is "home" and not being activated, it should work ok. I have had it mess the shifting up when the linkage was laying to the side and accidentally got activated all the time.

And you will find you need the kickdown on your setup also. The 302 is a small engine, and when you nail it to pass someone, it's not going to be very impressive trying to move a heavy truck. But if the kickdown is working, that automatically downshifts the trans and the rpms quickly go up. The 302 loves to rev, and then the higher rpms will open the secondaries on your 4bbl carb, and then you can really scoot down the road.

Makes sense to me. I am probably best to just remove the bar completely then. I was going to just back off the set screw all the way but then there is still chance of it activating possibly. If my spring and perch kit comes in early next week then I will have no worries anyways. Wasn't planning on going long without it, just want to be able to go around town a bit and make sure the rebuilt engine and trans aren't making any bad noises. I had the kickdown pop off once before and you are right, it has no go then ha.
