What will it take to convert my 79 f250 460 2 wheel drive with A/C over to the Saginaw power steering pump system. I have gone through 3 ford style pumps, the shaft moves in/out in a very short period of time and it is get old. 6 months and under 2Kmiles with squeals and very bad noises.. It does have a Red Top steering box.
I looked around. Short of going with a whole new aftermarket front dress, I didn't see anything. But it would be worth it to keep looking. I know from experience that the Saginaw pump is much better than the Ford pump. The link below is what I'll be using on the 460 I'm currently building. https://www.cvfracing.com/ford-429-4...ower-steering/
Power steering conversion only. From my other thread: I think I am going with the conversion. I have had enough with all the replacing pumps and squeals and noise racket. Bad thing is it turns and steer easy, I can get everything at CVF for 380$, just need to get with they again to make sure I get the right stuff for a 3 v belt crank pulley set up. Power steering set only. I hope I know what I am doing parts wise. CVF Racing
I always go through the steering box when a pump goes bad. Too many little places in a box to temporary trap small pieces and hold contaminated fluid. At the very least I would flush it with the return hose before just hooking it back up and risking putting all that crap through the new pump. A filter isn't a bad idea either.
I took a inmate advice. Sanded the pulleys and a new belt stopped the squeal and the racket. I wasn't worried the the conversion cost but 15$ is alot better that 380$

I used the front accessories from an E350 motorhome from the early 80's. E series vans or motor homes with the 460 should have all the brackets to convert to Saginaw pump and keep factory AC.
