power steering pump noise/conversion

I have a 72 f-250 4wd that I converted to Powerr steering,and the pump I installed is realy LOUD!.
I installed a 78-79 box,used a steering pump from a 79 broncoo 4wd (and hoses),I rebuilt the pump before I installed it so I don't understand why it's so loud.
I have heard other ford cars and trucks make this nosie before,so maybe it's just a ford thing but it sounds like poop!!
If anyone has any reasons why this is or has another pump recomendtion,I would like to here from you

I have no idea what Poop Sounds like. But I got a grip on various P/S Pump noises & I'm going to presume what you have is excessive growling sounds made by slippers in the P/S pump itself. I am also going to presume we are talking about a Saginaw type part time pump and not a Bendix Full Time High PSI pump by the years you describe & that presumes the vehicle you got it from had its' OEM Set Up.

Did you mess with the slipper vanes at all, and if so are they installed correctly?

Did you pre-lube the vanes or crank it up dry on the 1st start up?

Is your pump rated for ATF but it has Power Steering Fluid in it?

these are the most common casues for what I presume we are talking about. . . .

i lubed all partss as i put it back together, and filled the pump before start up.

i did put power steering fuild in it but don't know if it should have atf instead.there was no sticker saying so and it had steering fuild in it when i got it

pump noise

i got the p/s stuff for my truck off of a 77 and i used the pump that came with it. i had to change a few things in the way it mounted but i haven't had any noise problems, at least not yet. i also used regular p/s fluid.

Sounds like a bad pump that was making noise long before you
owned it. Use it as a core exchange on a rebuilt from your local parts store (could be as bad) or if you feel lucky get another pump from your local Pick-N-Pull and rebuild it.
After converting from a Bendix to Saginaw box and resealing the old pump I got curious and collected 5 spare pumps, two from bendix trucks and three from Saginaw trucks. All six pumps had the same pressure relief spring tension, flow control pins and internal parts, this is on the small filler tube can type Thompson pumps. Same with friends with their trucks with Thompson pumps.
