Transmission codes

Howdy I have. 2000 F350 with 220k miles throwing codes P0712 and P1783. It only throws those codes on hot days towing or not. I have an Edge Insight monitor and watch both the pcm temps and a probe in the test port. The test port never exceeds 175 degrees but the factory temp sensor goes crazy on hot days. It will track pretty close to initially but will eventually peg the gauge and throw codes. If I drive it long enough the temp will drop back down and track exactly the same temps as the engine oil temperature according to the Edge for awhile then bounce all the way back up. This also happens at the same time my AC stops blowing cold air. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help.

Im wondering if you are losing air through the radiator, coolers etc somehow? Is your fan clutch in good condition? look for fluid leaked out around its seal, turn it by hand, does it spin freely? it shouldn't freespin it should have resistance. what kind of of shape is your belt in? Any oil?

I wonder if the pcm is seeing these temps and disabling the ac compressor for max effort cooling

Do you have the stock transmission cooler? How does the transmission fluid look/smell?

Either the trans temp sensor on the solenoid body is bad or the wiring to the sensor is bad.

The P0712 means the electrical circuit is shorted to ground. This could be a wiring or sensor problem. When the problem is detected the PCM substitutes engine oil temp for trans temp. It's not a perfect match, but it is the best information that the PCM has. That's why it exactly tracks engine oil temp.

Kubota,

My fan clutch is working and the belt is good but probably due for replacement. I changed the transmission fluid last fall and the old fluid looked good also about 3 weeks ago I put in a 6.0 transmission cooler. Thanks for the input!

Mark,

Thanks for the info Mark, interesting that PCM defaults to using engine oil temps, that has been the part that really had me baffled. I suspect that the wiring is good to the transmission and that the problem is in the sensor in the solenoid pack. The main reason I say that is that it has no issues or throws any codes on cooler days. I'm thinking that it's either shorted to ground or not and outside air temperature wouldn't make that better or worse. Intermittent problems are always the most fun!
