Hey everyone, I have been a member here for several years but hadn't posted in a long time and when I went to sign in I couldn't remember what email or password I had used previously, so back again under a new moniker. My 94 shortbox, 4.9 L has had a couple of hiccups the last two times I had it out with the worst being the other day when it actually slipped in first gear then a hard shift into second with an audible bang. Truck has 149 ooo km, 80000 miles, fluid is bright red and level fine on dipstick. Truck has always been a toy, I have had it 8 years , never winter driven. Fluid was changed at 104 km, 8 years ago. I figure I am likely looking at a rebuild, wondering if flush and adding Lucas trans fix might make last thru the summer ? Any opinions appreciated. Thanks.
Both engine and trans are controlled by the same computer, that means there is only one place to get codes but it also means any sensor issue on the motor or trans can affect operation of either component, so you're not just looking for trans related codes. You will need an OBD1 Ford specific code reader too not some generic thing, the one to get is the Equus/Innova 3145.
thanks guys. My check engine light has been on for years lol. my mechanic always says it is a bad o2 sensor , the light stayed on after replacing the sensor so he said don't worry about it. I only put about 500 miles a year on the truck now with covid and my other vehicles , I will book it in for a scan and see what codes come up.
the code was cleared ,the light comes back on, it is always the O2 sensor code, it has been replaced. I haven;t had it checked for a few years as my truck is not used regularly. I have it booked for next Thursday. If I'm told I need a new computer, is there an option to buy one new, or one already rebuilt or flashed ? I haven't checked with the local Ford dealer parts counter yet, but the last time I was looking for a part, [ wiper switch ] , they said they don't have anything for OBS anymore.
Not sure why you would make an appointment to have codes read. As was stated in posts 4 & 5 you could buy a $25 code reader or use a paper clip and get them yourself. I hope they aren’t charging you a diagnostic fee to pull the codes.
You can buy Motorcraft parts online so jo need to visit the dealer for them. According to one of the members here the PCM/ECM that Ford has is the same are manufactured Cardone unit you’d get anywhere else.
thanks for the reply. I won't be charged to have the scan done. I have been going to the same guy for over 20 years. He is a Ford man, owns a 96 F350 . I have a disability in my hands and cannot hold onto anything with precision for more than a few seconds . you should see how long it takes me to type a message on here lol. Is Cardone a reman type business ? I'm on Ontario Canada. I'm not familiar with that brand . I will likely just let my tech find the parts necessary , just curious at this point.
