2003 e350 speedometer not working and trans shifting out of whack

Hello guys hopefully someone can help! My vans shifter **** light recently started to blink and speedo stopped working and trans shifts into second then slips and revs up and does all sorts of crazy things. Dropped pan in trans and replaced solenoid pack. That didn’t solve issue. Replaced VSS on top of diff. That didn’t work. Checked all fuses which are good. Took cover of differential and drain fluid and cleaned tone gear. Took it for a quick ride with no oil in diff and still the same! Any ideas?

Does the ODO show milage or is it blank? Did you check fuses?
These two things are related, the trans is computer controlled and speed is a critical input so pulling the codes should be the first step.

You need to electrically check the wiring between the PCM (Powertrain Control Module - the computer) and the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor.) Most likely you have either a broken wire or a wire that is shorted to ground.

Changing expensive parts just by a wild guess gets expensive pretty quickly, doesn't it? The shift solenoids couldn't possibly have been the problem.

Hopefully, you won't need to replace your rear diff. Driving with no oil in it? That's something that should never be done.

Just went up my driveway and back with no oil in diff to see if vss replacement along with cleaning tone gear did anything. Where is the pcm located on these? Should I try changing speedometer. I have access to a donor van I can pull it out of?

I think you should change every part that is on that vehicle. Change the axle, the transmission, the engine, the frame, all of the tires (you can reuse the wheels,) and the left side windshield wiper.

Or you could follow my advice that is in post #4, above, that will find the problem.

The PCM is located behind the parking brake pedal. You can access it from under the hood.

Ok thanks for the advice. I will do that and hopefully it’s what you are advising. Thanks for the info!

Disconnect the harness at both ends. While probing the BACK of the connectors, NEVER the end that makes the connection, check each wire for continuity from end to end, and check for continuity to ground and to power. There should be continuity from one end of the wire to the other, but no continuity to ground or to power.
