Carb parts

I am learning here so forgive the potentially dopey question.

I have an old Seized ‘55 223. The carb was bolted directly to the manifold.

I have a replacement ’62 223 where the carb bolts to a part that sits on top of the manifold.

What is this part?

That appears to be a governor.

Yes that is a governor. Purpose is to restrict rpms/top speed. Often used on commercial vehicles, government vehicles, industrial equipment such as the power source for a pump or a PTO shaft. I'm not an expert on this particular style but it is in the intake tract so it probably restricts airflow. Sometimes they interact with the distributor though so you'll have to wait for more advice on eliminating it.

Thanks! The 55 and 62 Carb were identical so it looks like I can just bolt the carb straight to the manifold. The linkage set up was different on both so I will just use the ‘55 linkage.

I don’t need a governor…I doubt it will do more than 55MPH Anyway……I can’t drive 55……!

That works as long as the distributor isn't affected. (ignition advance). I have no idea. You have two distributors though. You'll get better advice than I am giving you here soon.

Thanks. Things I didn’t even know to ask. I figured a distributor was a distributor.

Sometimes carbs and governors are a matched set. This may not be one of those times. I am not trying to be Mister Know-it-all and over advise. Mostly the two bolt carbs are universal enough. That part should be fine and they aren't so hard to rebuild.

I don’t know about that one, but the 49-52 maintenance manual explains how to remove the governor.

I figured somebody would be along by now. There are a couple straight six only Ford forums with gurus that are really into these OHV engines in great detail. They can answer questions if it becomes necessary.

Were there any vacuum lines running from the governor to the distributor? If not, you probably don't need to worry about it.

Are there any vacuum line connections possible to the distributor that are not the one at the vacuum advance?
