How much should a new front end replacement cost at a shop for "death wobble"?
Both bearings, one drag link, both outer tie rod ends, one inner & both upper and lower ball joints.
I have a 17 year old 4WD 6.0L Excursion with 170K on the clock. I had the entire front end done 5 years ago. All the front end parts were Moog. I also replaced the hubs with new Timkin hubs and all the required 4WD seals. The mechanic (a good friend and a very good mechanic) did it at his house. The total cost parts & labor was around $1600.
My driver side wheel bearing assembly was toast. It was strange how the problem showed itself. I had no death wobble symptoms at all until it happened 4-5 times in one evening. And boy, that gets your attention!
I swapped out the bearing assembly and I think the track bar bushing only. It’s been flawless since.
I've seen death wobble on 70s (F-100) thru current F-Series-- some real nasty, death-defying cases in newer F-Series -- I'm surprised the regulators haven't slam'd Ford yet (ditto Takata AirBags)
My Dodge Gen 1s 4x4s don't do it (fingers crossed) -- they "feature" chitty stuff in all sorts of other places.
I had an 86 250 4x4 with the new independent front end suspension, it had the death wobbles so bad you had to slow down to almost 20mph to stop it from wobbling. I had front end done top to bottom. After 6 months it was back. I did some self adjustments on and sold it asap.
My work cart (just a bit smaller than a golf cart) I used to drive all my tools between the buildings will almost toss you out of the seat if you let go of the
handle bar when you just a bit over a fast walk. I can tell you that a day ago I happened to let go of the bar and it almost tossed me out of the seal and
All I was doing for speed was just about a fast walk. It does tend to give one a pucker factor when your not ready for it.
I think the only other car/truck I have owned that got a little exciting was my 1967 VW Beetle and the fix was to replace the worn steering dampener.
One other vehicle that I think would really scare me would be a single engine Cesena aircraft. But when your landing if your not committed you can always
put the power to it and just go around and try a second go at the landing.
