Scrap or keep?

I've sold a lot of NOS and used parts in the last several years on ebay, Marketplace and at Carlisle. I have a few items that don't sell and are particularly heavy and I'm getting tired of loading, unloading and carrying them up 14 steps to the second floor of my garage. Give me your expert opinions.

1. I have a lot of NOS clutch and brake parts. I haven't listed them on eBay but have taken them to Carlisle for 5 years.

I have thought about listing the lot on Marketplace for cheap.

2. A box of assorted valves and springs. Again I could list as a lot for another sucker to buy. Individually I've seen valves only go for $10 each on ebay.

Some of these valves are to engines that are not popular rebuilds, I know. And if I were rebuilding an engine I'd buy new parts not stuff that been collecting dust and rust for 50 years.

I would list related small parts in lots on Marketplace. Give them an idea what they fit of course. Most buyers aren't going to bother looking up Ford part numbers unless they have a pretty good idea it is something worth their research.

Heavy used items that require reconditioning are always tough if there is an aftermarket equivalent (due to shipping cost).

IMO the brakes are scrap. I think if you did a bunch of research to identify what exact engine/trans the other parts fit, listed them individually or in groups (like the valves/springs), you could potentially wring a couple hundred bucks out of all that. Add in more time to box and ship them, deal with flakey buyers, etc. I'd bet in the end you'd be working for less than $2/hr.

Or drive down to the scrapyard and get $10 for all of it, and be done with it. There is a good deal of satisfaction to just get rid of stuff.

I offer as further evidence the fact he has made numerous attempts to sell this stuff already and it's getting heavy. Nobody wants used brake parts that need refurbished at a cost. About every rodder on this forum has thrown them in the trash with the rear end assy. Are the valves truly vintage? If so they are not all that suitable for modern gasoline. It's not just the valve seats that suffer with no lead. I'd prefer modern imported. Your time has some value too Abe.

Bob, I need one of those platform elevators in my garage. I have that stupid narrow pull-down stairs that I curse profusely at whenever I try carrying anything bigger than a box of Cheez-Its up or down them.

Pretty much agree with others here. One other suggestion, if you know of restoration shops that specialize in Ford trucks, you might send them an email with pics and a bulk price (take everything).

Pretty much guarantee one thing, a week after scrapping everything someone will post here looking for those parts. It's happened to me more than once.

Hoarding enabler.

Kidding, but I would get rid of the big stuff that is near worthless.

Not an hoarding enabler, just seems like this happens all of the time.

My dad was a hoarder. He had paths in his garage you had to walk through to get from front to back, junk was piled up 3-5 feet high. To add to the problem he was a garbage man for a very exclusive village that the rich people would throw out some very useable items and he and his fellow co-workers would drag home all of the treasures they found. On top of that he also collected all types of scrap metal waiting for the price of scrap to go up, which according to him, never reached the level he thought it should. When he died we had one hell of a mess to clean up. From that experience I try to limit my hoarding, just don't ask my wife.

Just have to know what to scrap which Abe is attempting to do. Not to harp on his brake parts but a new brake drum that doesn't need to be turned will cost you $45-70 DELIVERED Not the finest brand but it will have a warranty for a year or two and be within safety dimensions. If I buy Abe's I need to pay shipping for a heavy item and then find somebody to turn it for say $10-12. I have to hope it is within max diameter tolerance or a smart shop owner will give it back to me not quite cleaned up as well as I'd like it. If it doesn't work out I still own it. If Abe gives me the drum for next to nothing he has to package it up and drive it to the PO or whatever shipper. None of that is going to happen so he loads and reloads it heading to swaps. That is fine until it doesn't sell.

So dumpster bait. Or sell it to the scrap yard in the next load and get your money for a cup of coffee. Done and move on to something somebody actually wants.

Rear drums and rear backing plates have virtually no value. I threw 4 drums and 4 plates in the scrap pile this morning. However, I have a lot more if someone comes along needing them. Front drums and backing plates have value do not throw fronts away.
I would keep anything that isn’t being reproduced. Especially the transmission parts

Don't the hot rodders use F-1 brake backing plates on Model As and other Ford vehicles that had mechanical brakes? Maybe post on a few hot rod sites before scrapping.
