Refine Rear End "Clunk"

My 1986 F150 has the stock "19" rear axle. 8.8" w 3.55 gears. I don't care for the clunk sound when I drop it into gear or change from drive to reverse. I have a bare metal floor right now so that may be exacerbating the noise. It does have a bit of play in it at 140,000 miles. How much play is normal. I'm looking at maybe 5°. Hard to tell. Should these normally be pretty tight?

They all have play, some more than others. If it doesn't howl or grind, you are ok. If your idle speed is high and you have an automatic, that will aggravate the clunk.

I do have the 1986 EFI high idle on starts. The higher idle speeds at start up did definitely make a louder noise. Fortunately I have gotten that idle to lower quickly now, close to the normal 650 RPM within six or so seconds. My thoughts were that the hammering it took for many years with the high idle might have "worn" on it some.

It got its first and only gear oil change this past year. (80W-90) Does not howl or whine. The gear wear pattern wasn't dead center but was what looked like where it had always been since new. I'm sure when I install my Kilmat and carpet that it will make the noise more bearable.

Could the noise be from a bad U-joint instead of the differential?

Really, that sound you described is the normal U-joint that has too much play.
