Flywheel weight and Interchangeability

Good afternoon "Ford Persons". It has been a minute, but i love coming here to gather info. I don't know if there is a thread already asking this, but i couldn't find it. My question is rather simple. I have a '89 with 302, 5-spd (Mazda tranny-M5R2). A few years ago, I cracked the block and found a replacement but am only just now getting around to messing with it to install. While removing any working parts from the old engine to compare and re-use on the replacement, I noticed the flywheel has a different weight. The cracked engine had the extremely heavy flywheel with the clutch kit. The replacement engine didn't have a clutch kit, and the flywheel was extremely light. I assume the engine was for an automatic tranny. I haven't done a thorough investigation yet until i start to clean the parts. My question is, are the flywheels interchangeable? Also, is there a balancing issue that goes with the flywheels?

Auto transmissions use a flexplate which is a light stamped steel thing, the flywheel used with a manual has a large machined surface where the cluch mounts.

What year is the replacement motor?
The counter balance weight of the 302 changed in '82 from 28oz to 50oz, as long as the motor you have is newer than that you can use the flywheel from your old motor. There is also a small bearing in the end of the crank where the trans input shaft mounts, install a new bearing on the donor motor don't reuse the old one.

I don't know the ag of the donor engine. Is there a way to tell? i think it is newer, not by much tho. But assuming all is good as far as that goes, i can simply remove the flexplate and install the flywheel? No changing of the harmonic balancer or anything else?

There is a casting number on the side of the block near where the starter would mount, that would give you the relative age of the motor. If the donor was EFI it's at least an '86 as that was the first year so your're probably good to go.

Yes, swap on the flywheel and install a new pilot bearing is all that is required to make it compatible with a manual trans.
