The flywheel looks like it has like a counter weight carved in it to balance the engine. does this need to be in a specific location or can it go on any way? I didnt mark the old one because I didnt notice the weight until I turned the flywheel in for a new one. Im just replacing the clutch in my '77 F100 302 3spd 2wd and noticed cracks and worn teeth on the old flywheel
Thanks
The holes were not perfectly spaced in the flywheel for my 77 302 it would only go on easily with the holes lined up one of the six ways.
Okay thanks, Ill giver a try tomorrow morning. Ive been stressing about it all day at work because it just occurred to me that I didnt mark the darn thing.
Well, thanks guys, I got my flywheel on successfully! Nobody sold the flywheel that I had on the engine before. Well, everyones computers said my new one was the right one, so I bought it. My old clutch bolt holes didnt line up with the flywheel though. So I had to buy another clutch but the diaphram type. Fits way better! Ive just gotta fill it with fluid and adjust the clutch linkage and Ill be able to try it out.
What fluid should I run in my 3spd?
I use SAE 85W-140 hypoid grade oil. I don't know what the "hypoid" means but it's what Ford says we're supposed to use, maybe someone will know and post it here. This is also the oil to use in your differentials.
"Hypoid" gear oil is an oil designed for hypoid design gears. The common ring and pinion design is consdiered a hypoid design or hypoid cut. Others are known as "Spiral bevel", "straight bevel" and the "hypoid" gear tooth shape. This is more a matter of gear shape / design. The hydrodynamic (cool word huh) affects are greater thus creating a greater pressure, and requirements for higher pressure oils are mandatory. Thus the term hypoid oil. This is often refered to as Extreme pressure lube. SInce the transmission does not have hypoid cut gears, these demands are not as critical, and the trans does not require "EP" or hypoid oil.
There are no disadvantages for running GL-5 (EP90) in a manual trans that does not require it.
DOnt know why I remember any of this stuff, but once in a while it is cool to talk about........

Do you think there are and advantages to using it? I figured if it was for high demand environments then it should last longer and work better in a less severe environment than a lower quality but sufficient oil.
since there is not necessarilly the same pressures applied in the gears of a transmission as there is in a rear axle with a conventional hypoid design, using the HP gear lube may neither be an advantage nor carry any disadvantages.
Kind of like running higher octane fuel in a low compression engine. Not going to run any better if the compression demands are not there, but it wont hurt it either.
That being said, I am confident that for convenience reasons the EP oil is suitable for use in just about any gear box.
Wont hurt, but probably not going to see any additonal life expectancies or anything like that.
Perhaps if some other additives were present in one and not in the other this might make a difference but as far as higher pressure lubes being used in a low pressure application, I dont see an advantage, but cant identify any disadvantages either. (all viscosity being equal)
