Unhappy Why are AC lines so expensive???

Just took a trip across the US in my 2010 Expedition with the family and our AC died about half way across. Stopped at a Ford dealer to get it diagnosed and found out it was a line running to the rear AC (Part# CL1Z-19867-B) was rubbing the frame and rubbed a small hole in it where all of the refrigerant leaked out. They quoted me $1500 to get it fixed and I just about fell out in the floor! Now I'm back home and was looking to order the part and found out the part is over $500 bucks from the dealer and over $400 from Rock Auto... What is the deal with these AC lines and why are they so expensive? What are my alternatives to getting the fixed or should I just bite the bullet and pay the money?

FYI...visit a local mechanic...most of them have a compression fitting machine, purchase the hose in bulk and press fit the fittings on.....about 1/2 the price!

Wow! I'm really sorry to hear that you're faced with having to buy such an expensive part. Maybe its a part you can pick up at a local junkyard? Hopefully that's the case to save you some money.

Where exactly is it located and where in the frame was it rubbing? I wanna go check my 2010 Navigator to make sure it's not rubbing on mine.

In my hobby garage I use a Mastercool A/C crimper for fabrication (the Mastercool folks in NJ are a pleasure to work with also) -- the thing basically paid for itself after two projects. Refrigerants have gotten so ridiculously expensive it's best to avoid used / salvage yard parts -- either buy new or fabricate.

Hose by the foot, fittings etc are available wholesale (I use two suppliers in FL) nationwide.
