I have a 2002 f250 SD with the 5.4L. With automatic Transmission(4r100). I was sitting in the drive thru and a man ran up to me and said your trucks on fire. I jumped out and put the fire out quickly. The tranny was leaking on exhaust. I figured the tanny got hot and made the seal leak so I recently replaced the torque converter and trans filter. It starts fine but makes a whining noise when i go into gear and it starts moving. Stoped no noise even at a row it whines.my question is the old filter had a long tube at bottom and the new one had a short tube could that make the whining? Maybe not reaching the fluid? I think my pump my be going out not sure any advice would be appreciated
Yes, you have the wrong filter. You probably bought a filter for a 2 wheel drive. All 4R100 transmissions (except the Lightning) use the 4x4 filter. That could be causing the whining.
When you replaced the torque converter did you replace the bushing and seal at the front of the pump? If not, expect leaks again. And there is an aftermarket seal that is much better than the original seal. The aftermarket one is made from a material called Viton.
Yes i replaced the front and back seal. It is a 2 wheel drive not sure why they would use a 4 wheel drive filter on a 2 wheel drive? Thanks for the reply I'll change that out and see if it helps if not i guess next step would be pump?
The reason is that the E4OD had a deep pan for the 4x4 and a shallow pan for the 4x2. The 4R100, which uses the same pan and filter, uses the deep pan for all except the Lightning. Almost every parts lookup I've seen outside of a dealer shows the wrong part. They all (except the Lightning) use the longer filter, which they list for the 4x4. They are wrong.

replaced filter with longer one and it is still whining maybe the pump is going out? As soon as the converter starts to move it starts to whine

The whine is caused by cavitation (air/foaming). It is getting air someplace and that's why it whining. Gotta ask, is there a chance you doubled up the O ring on the filter neck? Did you get the original O ring out before replacing the filter?

the new one already had the ring on it so i installed right out of the box. I pulled the old filter off and pulled the old ring This is the filter i got.
