Power Steering or Alignment?

Truck is a 20 F150 CC longbed HDPP w/3.5L.

Since day one it seems to want to go left if i let go of the wheel. No matter the road, lane, weather conditions, etc. It also seems harder to turn to the right than the left. At low speeds its fine, but once the power electric assist seems to tighten the steering up it becomes much harder.

I had it aligned 2x now and only have 8k miles. the first was within the first 2000 miles, came back good I saw the sheet. Just had it done again about a month ago, it was off, but not much just the toe.

Im thinking the power steering needs to be recalibrated or reprogrammed as it just keeps on pulling to the left. Its bad enough if you let go the wheel it will go into the next lane.

There a TSB or recall or something on it?

found this posted here about drift compensation?? why cant they just leave the damn things alone and get rid of all this bs junk idk

I haven't touched the settings in awhile but in forscan there is definitely settings that can be adjusted. You can also turn off the road crown compensation. The stock tires don't help as many have found.

I had that problem with a truck years ago. Only had 8k miles on it, but the tires were defective and were the cause. New tires and the problem was gone.

can you turn off the road crown compensation without forscan?

I played musical tires, doesnt seem to change. i will say im unimpressed with the goodyear wrangler silent armor tires it came with, if its wet out it slides everywhere

Rotate the tires. See if that makes a difference. It's cheap and easy.

already done

literally the steering wheel wants to return to about the 11 o'clock position all the time despite it being spot on with alignment. only happens while going fast, driving in a parking lot or slowly under about 30 is no issue. on the road it was to go left if i let go of the wheel

which is why it seems its the dumb electric power steering system. i havent gotten around to calling the dealer, im hoping they can recalibrate it

Hopefully the shop doing the alignment knows the truck has to be off and the battery disconnected for alignment. Anything else and it will return to the wrong center or rack damage can result.

not even Ford does this. Is this the documented procedure to do it?

Whoever did your alignment didn't re-center things properly. Electric power steering isn't the same as the old hydraulic systems. Once the alignment is done, the entire system needs to be recalibrated. The rack should also be centered before an alignment is done.

It's in the FSM. You also may need to do a manual module reset to allow the rack to do a test sweep. This is required or else the module will not have proper center and there will be a issue with the RSC. Being that the OP has the wheel pulling to the left it tells me someone only adjusted the inner tie rods. The outer tie rods should have instead been popped and spun. You are forcing the rack away from its known center. If you attempt tie rod removal with power applied to the rack you will be buying a new rack. Many have learned that lesson.

"NOTICE: For vehicles equipped with Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS), disconnect the negative battery cable anytime the steering linkage is being serviced or damage to the steering gear internal power relay may occur resulting in steering gear replacement."

incase anyone is following:

welp dealer called after they had it the whole day

yes the actual alignment and power steering setup was off. the alignment itself not so much, but the steering was. they had a LONG discussion with me and explained how the thing basically decides whats center and sticks with that. like i told them, it was drifting into the other lane it was pulling so much if you let your hands off the wheel. on top of that turning to the right almost reminded me of an alignment where the wheel isnt centered and the center return is more like 9 o clock. it was forcibly returning from right compared to the left. hate to say it but there was NOTHING wrong with torsion bars or a solid axle or even a regular non electronic setup like they have done. I thought i was nuts really and thought it was just me..but its not

what i believe is the stupid thing thought center was about 10'oclock and kept trying to put the wheel there. add in the pos goodyear silent armor tires it comes with pumped up to an obnoxious 45psi (40 psi is the min before the light will turn on cause i have the HDPP and it didnt matter it still wandered may i add) it likes to wander. they assured me its better, but lets see. i mean reality is this is SUPER annoying and imho dangerous.so tomorrow i can go get it and see

if this is how they are, and it cant be corrected ill trade the thing in and buy a F250 ffs. still old school solid axle on that with a power steering box! or maybe i try another dealer?
