So I’m going through my paperwork from the PO and there is a note where her mechanic unplugged the OD switch per the customer request about 10,000 miles prior to me getting the vehicle and on the receipt it states the overdrive is off.
where would I find this plug (is it behind the dash) and does it make sense to plug it back in?
will the truck drive any differently with it plugged back in?
I use the truck for trips to Lowe’s but I will be pulling a 6x12 trailer with dirt bikes about 2 hours each way pretty soon. Just getting her road worthy.
i also found another receipt where the transmission was fully rebuilt 50k miles ago as well due to a transmission failure.
the truck drives and stops great. Just wondering about the switch.
I dont recall the 90/91 E40d way of acting. I do know that my 94 if I turn it off, next time I restart the truck ( engine ) the overdrive resets and is turned back on. I thought it was just a momentary push button. Maybe the older units had a latch on built in the switch? Even so if unplugged? Depending on where it was unplugged. I would think easiest place would be the back of the push button. Is the OD off light lit when driving the truck?
The light is not on when I start the truck or when I push the button. When it’s not 98 degrees outside I will look under the dash and see if it’s unplugged from the button.
if that is plugged in, any guess where to look next?
The plug is not under the dash. It is inside the steering column. You need to remove the plastic cover from the column, and then you will be able to see the plug near the end of the shift handle.
All years of OD OFF were momentary contact switches.

thanks mark. I will take a look at it this week. If it is unplugged that just means I can’t turn the OD off, meaning it’s on all the time like a normal vehicle. The OD off button is for towing so that the engine assists in slowing down the vehicle to compensate for the trailer?
The overdrive is always enabled when you start the vehicle. Pressing the button turns off overdrive. The off button is used when you need engine braking, whether or not you are towing. It is also used if the trans is frequently shifting in and out of overdrive.
Another reason to have it connected is that the light is used to indicate when there is a transmission issue. If a transmission error code is stored in memory the OD OFF light will flash on and off continuously.
