help me understand

so i had a fuseable link catch fire on my grandads truck, its the link that runs from the starter solenoid to the alternator just before the splice block that feeds some of the connector and the voltage regulator. im trying to rap my head around what could have caused that one wire to short out but the others look perfectly fine. anyone ever seen or experienced this? im kinda at a loss here.

also it may be worth adding that my haynes manual does not show nearly as many wires as this thing has and as best as i can tell this is original to the truck.

You'll be able to find all kind of info from this forum, Gary's Garagemahal (the Bullnose bible) - Bullnose Forum

These things seem to have that issue, I had my trusted mechanic fix mine a few years back. It was under $200 and its been fine ever since.

You'll find How To's here above to change to a different alternator set up too.

Other's with more knowledge will chime in soon.

So, have you fixed it yet? If you haven't, I would disconnect the battery cables, repair it with another fusible link, and then use a old style battery charger to clip on to the battery cables instead of using the battery itself. The old battery chargers had a circuit breaker that will trip in case you do still have a problem. This battery charger trick is soon going to be obsolete though. It seems all you can buy now in the store are "smart chargers" and they will not work like this.

If that is the fusible link near the starter solenoid, then it's probably the one that feeds the whole truck's electrical system. That is fusible link "J" in the diagram below. All the other fusible links above it in the diagram are options you may or may not have.

i dont believe that diagrahm is the one for my truck since the regulator is made in to the alternator on that where my regulator is external

SO, can you tell us exactly what truck you have with the engine and transmission ?

We assumed you have a 1980-1986 Ford F150-350
