I added some aux reverse lights by tapping into the trailer wiring
Everytime I put the truck into reverse fuse at pos 70 blows with the lights connected.
Lights are wired parallel. Should be pulling about 3amp. Lights are wired into the ground for the trailer wiring. Any suggestions on what's going on with this?
these are the lights I'm using. Thanks.
when hooked up to an external power source lights work fine.
Yeah, a relay hidden in the bed taillight pillar would be the best option. Get power from the battery and immediately put in an inline fuse before bringing the power to the back. Use the reverse light to trigger the relay. Splicing into the trailer wiring is just never a good idea. It opens the trailer wiring which is in the worst possible place under the truck to corrosion and failure.
I Just added a backup camera to my 2015 F250 and did quite a bit of research on this. I read several posts about not tapping into the actual back up light circuit, as it is controlled through the BCM and can cause a lot of unusual reactions, such as transmission errors, no start, and others. I also read that FORD recommends and there is supposed to be a service bulletin to use the trailer circuit as it is not ran through the BCM and goes through the BJB, Center pin - Reverse is fuse 70 and relay 76 as I recall. I hooked up my reverse camera through the center pin and all is well.
I did discover a significant problem while hooking it up however. My truck was bought used and not sure when or how, but the trailer connector had been push in slightly and the wires were pinched together and binding against the bracket. Three of them needed cut, cleaned up and spliced just to get it back to operational. I am ordering a replacement connector and pigtail to fix it right, but have a camping trip around the corner. Good luck finding the issue, I have a little 12volt battery back up unit and it comes in handy to inject a power source sometimes to find broken circuits, wires and blown fuses.
I tapped into the reverse lights. Have a rock climbing light on each side of the bumper and two harbor freight led with 5 leds facing back. No issues whatsoever. I also ran a dedicated feed to a switch panel in the bed . One switch is tied into the reverse lights so I can turn them on at night if I needed to do something at the back of the truck. I removed the rear facing rock climbers when I added the other leds. I also replaced the OEM backup lights with leds before I added these. They were a big help, but with tinted windows I wanted more light.
