Need help diagnosing a vibration! I have a 2017 F-250 Lariat 4x4, Crew Cab, 6.7 L Diesel, 65,000 miles. Over the last 2,000 miles a vibration started and it's been getting worse. I feel it in the Steering Wheel and in the Driver's Seat when I go more than 60 mph. It's like sitting on a paint shaker. It gets worse the faster I go, and seems to be more pronounced when accelerating.
Troubleshooting so far:
(a) Took the truck to the local Ford Dealer and had them look at it. They couldn't figure it out but thought it might be a wheel/tire issue. They said it wasn't Death Wobble.
(b) I replaced the tires and had them balanced multiple times. The shake/vibration is still there.
(c) driven on smooth roads, accelerated up to 80 mph and shifted into Neutral. The shake/vibration is still there with the engine at idle speed. It's not being produced by the engine.
(d) I've gotten under the truck and checked the U-Joints. No problem with them and don't see anything unusual elsewhere on the underside.
Has anyone had this problem? It's driving me crazy......
When you had them balanced did they do road force?
I’m dealing with vibration now and third time had them road forced. Found them to be way out of recommendations (98#,68#,54#,49#). And this was after they wheel matched and best they could do.
I have all four being replaced under warranty. Les Schwab said they would have rejected them if they were over 39#’s. Unfortunately, due to tire stock situation I ordered from a company out if California that had four in stock so had to go to a Goodyear shop to file warranty. Currently my size Duratracs are on National back order👎
Find a shop that does road force and see if that’s the issue!
One of the Balancing jobs did a Road Force. They couldn't get the tires in spec so they just balanced them.
I've actually had the tires replaced twice. I replaced the stock tires 3 months ago at 62,500 miles. The vibration seemed to start after that. It was very subtle; I felt it at about 70 mph. The vibration then got worse. That's when I took it to the shop that did the Road Force. I had that set of tires replaced last week under warranty and the vibration is still there. The tires are all the same as the stock tires: 20" Michelins.

Wow, that’s not good. Could the tires be from same production run? I know low chance, but stranger things happen…
If aftermarket wheels, you have to remove the brake rotor retaining clips since the aftermarket wheels don't have a space machined into the back side to accommodate the retainers.
Not sure about the production runs being the same.... I'm leaning toward having the new tires Road Force Balanced. It's just hard to believe the vibration I'm feeling is from inconsistent compressive force from the tires.
Check the ball joint on your drag link. If it getting worn it will let both wheels shudder in tandem and it feels like out of balance tires.
I haven't checked ball joints for wear before. I've replaced them but that was when they were visually worn-out. I expect the wear on my 2017 will be subtle. Do you know of a website or video that shows how to check for wear? Appreciate the help -
No - haven't rotated them. The latest set of tires were just installed 5 days ago. Prior to getting the latest set of tires, when the first set of new tires were on the truck, the tires were balanced 3 times, rotated, and road force tested.(which they didn't pass). The shudder was the same, very noticeable in the steering wheel and in the Driver's Seat when going over 65 mph.
I just checked the ball joint on the Drag Link. With the engine off, I got under the truck and had my wife turn the steering wheel back and forth. The socket moves about 1/64" in and out. Is that enough play to cause a shudder?
If changes to the balance and position of the tires/wheels doesn't change the vibration then the thing to do is look further into the rotating parts of the driveline and brakes for balance issues.
Suspension and steering slop wouldn't cause the described issues only above 65 mph, it would happen at all speeds.
Thanks - I've been wondering about the Driveshaft. On your truck, did you have a shudder/vibration ever since it was new? Or did it develop after you'd driven it for a while? My truck used to drive very smooth until 3 months ago when the shudder/vibration started up - at about 63,000 miles
