My 240 started making this noise a few months ago. It doesn't do it at start up, but will after idleing for several minutes or driving for half a mile or more. I've replaced the water pump, alternator and belt. The belt ,I did several times with different belts. AC was never connected. Nothing has affected the noise. I would like to figure it out before I swap in a 300 I have almost completed. Thoughts?
Thanks. John
(Hopefully the link works.)
When you opened the throttle which drops the intake manifold vacuum the whistling stopped for a moment then it increased as the vacuum increased when you let off.
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
Try running the engine with the fan belt off just for a minute after the engine is warm. That will eliminate water pump, fan and alternator.
I know you said they were replaced but having the fan not turning will make it easier to here the problem.
It sounds more like a whistle in the video.
Took the truck for a good drive today and removed the belt , when I got home. Noise is still there. Seams to be loudest up near the top of the motor, by #2 and #3 cylinders. I'm going try and run it with the valve cover removed, this weekend. It still sounds more like a metal contact whine.ddddddddf
Grab a rubber glove, or baloon, and a rubber band, and put it over the breather tube. That will tell you pretty darn quick if it's sucking crap in, or trying to blow crap out.
I lightly put a finger over it and felt nothing. I removed the valve cover and the only thing abnormal was #1 cyl exhaust wasn't getting any oil. I heavily sprayed brake cleaner around, and started noticing a slight change in the engine. This was around the carb base. Tightened up the bolts, no change. I've replaced the mounting gasket. and no have to get it running again as I messed something up when I replaced the lifter on #1 exhaust. The old carb gasket looks ok so we'll see how things act when I get it running.

pmuller wins the prize. I did have a vacuum leak. The front three manifold bolts were loose. With those tightened up, the noise hasn't come back, as of yet. I also discovered that I have distributor issues. There doesn't appear to be any working mechanical; advance and the vacuum advance only provides a set amount. The prevous owner replaced the points with a petronix unit, and I never did a tune up on it.
Thanks for every ones help. Now I can get on with the swap.
