Edo4 transmission

I'm building a mud bogger. I have a 5.0 engine. It had the factory engine control and fuel injection. I removed it all and installed a 4 barrel intake and carburetor. Then installed a distributor that I just have to supply power to it. What do I have to do to get the edo4 transmission to work properly? It doesn't seem to be shifting the way it was when fuel injection was on it.

The same computer that controlled the fuel injection also controlled the e4od transmission. The transmission has no idea what is going on since you threw away all of the stuff/ information that it needs to run correctly.

There are stand alone controllers to run the transmission but it is my understanding that they aren’t cheap.

Your practical options are to put it all back, install a standalone controller, or put in a different trans like a C6 or AOD.

If I put controller back on and hook up everything except the fuel injection do you think it will work then? I know I won't have throttle position sensor. The tps might be needed for kick down.

I'm trying to research the way the transmission works. The little bit I found out is the the controller controls shift points and transmission pressure and locks the converter. Am I understanding that correctly? Is there anyway I can identify the wires for the shift solenoids and shift like a standard with switches?

No, it needs engine inputs to function. It is theoretically possible to set it all up so it is getting the correct inputs from a carb setup, but I haven't seen it done successfully. I don't think it would be fruitful use of your time to try.

Yes, I've done this with an E4OD. It lasted about a hundred miles before the forward clutch drum blew apart. I didn't have any way to control pressures, and the forward clutch drum can't handle max pressure. It will blow apart.

Thank you for that valuable information 👍. I'm looking a a stand alone turner now. But I see I'm going to have to mount a tps somehow. I have a eldibrock carb.

Seems to me it would have been easier to run a fuel injected engine through the mud bog.

Yes I think your right. Now that I think about it. And just get a engine tuner. My original thought was old school. No electronics with water and mud. Not knowing about transmission ahead of time.

US Shift makes a very complete kit that would probably get you on the road, but it is spendy. The popular E4OD tuner computer is the PimpXshift by Stinger Performance. It is even more spendy, and you would still have to put the original harness and equipment back.

Assuming you kept and didn't destroy the original parts putting it back to stock is probably the cheapest option. A junkyard C6 probably wouldn't be too spendy, but it would be a fair amount of work and you would have to source other matching parts.

If you go back to stock, you still have some ability to get more power out of the engine, there is just a limit to what you can do.
