When I bought my truck ('01 7.3 RWD @ 235k mi) it was missing the battery box / air intake cover... I do have a lot of blow by in my engine bay, but I imagine lack of the cover made the filter get to this point much earlier. I obviously replaced the filter when I bought it, but I'm wondering if I should source that cover, or do you guys commonly run without it... Any reason why it shouldn't be there?
I would find another unit as it allows fresh cool air from the front of the truck to enter the engine...versus sucking in that hot air in the engine compartment. I suppose folks remove those for ease of access to the drivers side battery. I don't like the open element style filters as they are noisy...I know, I know, but the Excursion is much quieter inside the cabin.
