In the past I’ve typically replaced my fuel filter every 15k miles. In Apr 2020 I did the SSJ version of the hutch mod and added a Racor filter inline. I’ve hit the 15k mark to change the filter but I’m toying with the idea of holding out to 20k.
The main purpose of this post is to see what mileage everyone else changes their fuel filters at. Where do you stand?
I do 15k. I also have the racor H/H, but it just replaces what was in the tank. Shouldn't be considered extra filtration to delay filter change intervals IMO.
As mentioned above, Racor should not be a consideration.
Ford says every 15,000 miles (I am pretty sure, but going from memory). I got 22,000 miles out if my last filter and only changed it because we were getting ready to travel cross country towing the 5th wheel.
Typically I watch the FP gauge during idle and high fuel demand situations like towing up a hill or grade. Once I start to see the FP lower, I put in a new filter.
When I use one, I buy a new one to sit on the shelf to swap in quickly.
Fuel filter neglect is the only thing that has stranded me on the side of the road in the 20 years of owning my truck (since new). At 1:00 AM no less!! I have changed once a year since.
How do you know? I like Sous's method if you're set up to monitor fuel pressure like he is.
I was noticing 2-3psi lower at idle and about 5-6psi lower at high power. I noticed this drop maybe 3000 miles ago but only changed the filter last week when chasing other gremlins.
Search for places that has Fleetguard or Baldwin in their catalog, for example.I have had access to those here in Finland. Those are reliable brands used in heavy machinery etc.
Supposed to be 15k but I ran it 25k last time and noticed no drop in performance, or improvement with the new one for that matter. This time I will let it go for 20...not this oil change but the one after that. Local auto parts store stocks the Motorcraft filter kit for around $35
