A/C Compressor Types….
I’ve noticed the F-Series and E-Series compressors are interchangeable — but the clutch hubs are different. The pulley numbers are different too… but they have the same dimensions so I assume that is so they mate to the different hubs.
The later model (1999-2003) E-series has a 3-eye style outer hub:
While the f-series has a “normal” outer hub:
The older E-series and F-series share the same part for the Powerstroke.
So riddle me this you Ford truck enthusiasts — what exactly is the difference?
Why the three eyes vs. the flat style? Seems they started using this three eye pulley in newer trucks and many other passenger vehicles of similar vintage to my van (excursion).
PO installed a junk compressor — so I’m going OEM on the next repair and found a NOS unit for a good price locally — but has the f-series clutch hub. Think I can send it? Or is the difference in hub important?
EDIT: This article seems to imply the clutches with "eyes" provide damping, and are a newer design.
Sounds like it shouldn't be a big deal to run one without the "eyes". Think I'll send it -- especially considering the unit that the PO installed now doesn't even have that 3-eye design -- but it's a cheapo from the auto parts store--and is leaking from the case halves!
