I have an 88 f250 diesel with the fs6 compressor I think. I know my clutch it shot but I need to know if the compressor is gone too. The clutch will engage an turn with the motor but the center bolt just barely moves.
does that piece of thread go into the main shaft or crank. I just am not sure if I need a clutch or compressor. Thanks
The outer clutch plate/hub the arrow points to in the picture rotates
with the compressor all the time. It's pressed on the compressor
shaft and the nut threads onto the compressor shaft. The
nut is torqued to 10-14 ft. lbs.
With the engine off if you use your hand and rotate the outer
clutch plate you're rotating the compressor and should feel
some resistance. The clutch air gap between the clutch pulley
and the clutch hub is set using shims. The air gap should be
should be .021-.036 inches.
A special tool is used to pull the clutch hub off and should
be available for rent if you have an Autozone near you.
Thats the way I thought it worked. You can hold the pulley an clutch with one hand an turn the nut with the other an the nut an shat turn an never tighten up so I guess the screw or shaft is broken, guess I will start looking for a new compressor. Thanks
