I have an 89 f150 with the 5.0 and a 5 speed I’ve been having to reach down to the ignition switch to start and I’m trying to figure out why the key won’t do anything besides unlock the steering wheel. While I was doing this I found a purple and black wire that is broken and I need help finding out what this does.

I believe that wire is for the key-in chime. Probably a PO disconnected that on purpose.

WRT your having to operate the ignition switch manually, your actuator is probably broken. Very common problem on these trucks.
