Data Link Connector

I have a 1996 F150 4.9 pickup that I'm have been unable to get any data out of the Data Link Connector. I have a check engine light on in the dash and when a OBDII tester is hooked to the connector, nothing happens. The test just has a "blank" not turned on appearance. Anybody have any ideas on what to check before I'm force to pay BIG bucks at a dealership?
Thanks for your time.

Make sure the tester is truly a OSB ll if it is a combo unit OSB l-ll make sure it has the setup for PWN; I think that is the Ford protocol.

Search for EFMF or HLOS. Mine shows nothing also. A Ford dealer has better tools than a $150 multi-brand tester.

I bougth a OBD ll scanner and had not problems at all. The scanner cost me less than $150.00. I also had MIL (malfunction indicator light) on and it found the code that was causing it. I was also able to clear the code.
