Gentlemen..just had the tranny replaced in the wifes truck..now we appear to have a starter issue. You turn the key and you hear the solenoid on the fender well click, then you hear a heavier click come from below,by the starter..then thats it. It sounds like a the starter drive is pooched. How hard is it to change the starter on one of these? What size are the bolts that hold it on? Its currently minus 4celcius with a nasty wind, so the less time I have to spend crawling around under the truck the better.
Thanks for your time Mike D
Did the problem start right after the tranny replace?? If so, it may just be loose conncection on the starter. You should be able to reach the wires from underneath and see if there is any change when moving the wires around. You also might want to cross the large terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver on the fenderwell. If you do have to replace the starter, it's no big deal. I think(it's been awhile) there are 2 bolts that hold it in. Remember to disconnect the battery first.
Tried the bumping of the starter with the screw driver at the fender solenoid, just got the heavy clicking sound from the starter. The truck has been running great since the tranny was done.
New info....when the brother in law took the truck to vancouver, it would not start when they stopped for gas.. the local mechanic took the starter out..he said that the brushes looked about toast..that it should last till he got home. It was also filled with a thick gunk..I am now,(with this new info!) more convinced that its a starter prob...the gunk I figure is tranny fluid that found its way into the starter..seen it happen before.
So now I guess its time to put on the thermals and water proofd and go pull a starter..any idea what size the bolts holing the sucker on are? Metric or standard..my metrics are limited so if it is, I would rather know before I crawl under the truck
Thanks for the reply.......Mike D
The starter is an easy fix. It is located just behind the drivers wheel on the bottom. Two bolts and thats it. One thing to check first is the large wire on the starter. It has a slide connection and sometimes it pops off. I had this happen a half dozen times before I changed the connector. I believe this is the high voltage wire that bridges the circuit. I do know it wont start without it and the solenoid will click on top with it disconnected. If it proves to be a starter, should be a thirty minute job.
Changed it last night...yeah, what fun. I guess when you can't lift the truck, changing the sucker gets a little more difficult.
When we pulled it out, it made a clunking noise...sooo, I pulled it apart.
Only one brush was still visable, and the main shaft was almost welded to the ends...major problem somewhere for it to get that hot!
Thanks for the help, also as to the little plug wire, ours was loose so a new one was made up and tested on the old starter..still no go, thats when I got down to pulling it out. Lucked out, a buddy at a wreker had a truck come in that was a roll over and the starter was only 2 weeks old..got it for 85 cdn..verses the 150.00 that was the average.
Wifes happy..she has her "Baby" back. Just as the weather got nasty.
Once again thanks for the info.....Mike D
