99 explorer bucks
My 1999 explorer just developed an issue. While crusing the truck stumbles at approx 1500 RPMS. Acts like it is losing power. While going down the highway and on a slight incline the stumble is most noticable, it also backfires somewhat. Does any one have any ideas on what may be wrong.

Just a few thoughts that may assist......compliments of a Haynes manual.
1. Spark Plugs and Leads.....gaps can grow over time which can upset timing.
2. The manual refers to an EGR system not functioning properly
3. Vacuum leak at manifold
4. Clogged air filter.
I have the V6 pushrod model which is equipped with a MAF Sensor. The difference it made to the overall performance when the MAF was removed and cleaned was incredible - including at low idle. Looking at the diagram of the 5.0L motor, yours is equipped with the same device. (down near the air filter on the main air intake.) Removal isn't difficult - nor is cleaning. Spray it out with a circuit cleaning spray available at most electronic stores. (used to be FREON prior to the hole in the ozone layer.)
Hope these things may help.

The alignment sounds like a good idea - but appears to be terribly expensive at $100. I had new tyres fitted recently, along with an alignment. The alignment itself cost $42AU. (around $15US)
While I don'tknow the rates over there, it may pay to shop around.
Take care - and I look forward to hearing your POSITIVE solution that the dealer will I HOPE provide!

Just got off the phone with the service rep. The check engine light is due to the plug wires, (enging code P0304, #4 misfire). They want $400.00 plus to change the wires or $200.00 plus for a set of wires, seems extremly high for plug wires. I am going to change them myself. I am having them do a tune up for $250.00 while they have it, which includes plugs, fuel filter, air filter, fuel injection cleaning, intake cleaning, and reset of the computer. Who knows maybe the tune up will fix the check engine light. Will post when I get the truck back, hopefully good news. I know what I will be doing this weekend, (plug wires).

Got the truck back and it is running fine. Still wanted to replace the wires. What a fun job, took about 2 hrs. Still think it was worth the $300.00 savings. The #4 wire was the worst, I think the engineer was playing a joke on the owners. The dealer told me the #4 plug was bad from tracking on the #4 wire. I never heard of such a thing. I think they were just trying to get a few extra bucks, when I got the #4 wire off I could not find any arcing. Anyway all is fine now and it is running good. Hopefully this will last awhile. Just have to wait and see. Thanks all
