I have a starter issue I think?
In my 1986 f250 diesel I go to start it, rolls over slow.
when i turn the key you can hear the relay click, if you tap the starter with a hammer then turn the key it rolls over real slow.
in the summer i had put a new battery in it.
trying to start the truck it will almost kill the batteries and i have to charge the batteries to try starting it again
So i guess my question is do you think the starter is going?
I had my starter go bad yesterday while changing the timing and carb. Sum bitch was full free spin, new one was $50 with a lifetime warranty. Hardly any free spin, and it cranks that 460 over like nothing. It its an easy job, crawl under near the passenger front tire, two bolts half inch, and then one like a 10 mm, I had it back in, in 15 minutes. Out took me about 30-1 hr cause I didn't know what I needed tool wise and struggled braking the bolts loose and I got tired.
+1 on it being a bad starter. I had one do this on a Jeep Cherokee. It wouldn't spin at all, just click, and if it did spin, it'd spin slow. A whack with a tire iron got it spinning enough to crank.
I just had to replace my starter too....I had bought a remanned one from O'Reillys back in '05 and this month it finally wore out. It had chipped teeth, shot bearings, the gear would stay out way too long, and it was noisy as heck (you could hear me across a parking lot)....
Make sure you get the lifetime warranty if you buy a new or remanufactured one. I just gave the store my old starter and they did a straight swap with me. I didn't pay a cent because I got the lifetime warranty.
