So I drive a 2003 7.3 with now some 203 K miles on it.. I am third owner and got most of the paperwork from second guy showing where the CPS was replaced under warranty some years ago.. there was also a new NAPA CPS in glove box as well.
All has been good till about 2 months ago when we would get a slight "skip". usually when idling in parking lot at low to slow speed it would skip and shut off.. A quick restart and good to go..
While at a campground last month i decided to change to new one and do oil change..
I did notice the new one had a larger end the you slide in the motor when compared to old one that came out.
So put this new CPS in and get some weird stuff.. going down the road usually coasting it would burp like but keep going.. the other day when at a weigh station the guy in front would not moving so i blipped the horn,, dang tuck shut off.. so i restarted and did it again, blip horn and truck shut off.. We got over scales and on the way out under power hit the horn and motor skipped but keep running..
So now i have a new black ford unit to change out to see if this was the issue..
has anyone had such a deal with a non oem CPS?? its freaking out my wife..
Yes. In my case the NAPA CPS would cause the truck to randomly skip, and completely stall if I used the wipers. Motorcraft CPS completely fixed things.
The CPS is a hall effect sensor which is sensitive to electromagnetic fields, so I guess the NAPA variety isn't well shielded/is too sensitive nearby EMF.
good to know.. wipers not a big deal.. ran them almost all day when driving up to mt rainier with snow at the visitors center.. so guess i need to change it out..
Trudat.. have a real CPS now so that is next on list.. after watching the video on youtube from a guy that does a lot of work on fords was suspect this might be a fake you can get off amazon.. but the packaging and other features matched up so i am good with knowing it OEM quality..

I have seen some CPSs that are just a touch shorter than others. These tend to "miss" signals from the crank as it is spinning and can cause skips. It is basically a magnet reading pulses as the camshaft spins past.
Wrap some tin foil around yourself and the sensor!
That only works with aliens and telepathic mutants. Everybody knows that, I think there might be a link in the tech section too. Dang FNG's always throwing around false diagnostic and repair info.
