Just wondering if anyone has seen an AOD that failed with a broken snap ring and retaining plate for the intermediate clutch. also the thrust washer inside the reverse drum is ground down real bad. Before this transmission failed, their was a noise inside the transmission which I assume was the grinding of metals from the broken snap wring and retaining plate. I am just wondering if someone has seen this before and if so what was the cause. Thank you.
that is a common problem in that trans. i have been through 4 of them. i refuse to use an aod ever again . rite now as i`am speaking i am converting a 1991 ford e150 van 5.0 efi to a c6 transmission. 91 92 93 are the best years for the aod if you are looking for a used trans somewhere. the early aods had rear case oiling problems. if you can find one from a 351w that has the best parts in it . i have 4 bad ones sitting in the garage rite now . are you rebuilding your own? if you are looking for a used one make sure you get the rite size tail housing 10.25 or 11.25 and dont buy one from phenoix rebuilt transmissions. i bought the last one that just went out 2 weeks ago after 5000 miles from them . the warrenty from them is 6000 or 6months witch ever comes first. i had a dealer set the trans up to make sure it was rite . after replacing lines radiator ect i was 2 months out of warrenty i sent them an email telling them about it and they wont ever reply at all . not even to tell me there is nothing they can do about it.

get you a rebuild manual the ford ones are the best but they are expensive i would find an atsg manual to start with and read up before you start you will need a clutch spring compressor bushing driver set dial indicator lip seal protectors and there are a lot of special tools for the aod www.atec-trans-tool.com has tools the cheapest price i found on a spring compressor was for kd tool #2398 most places want $100 and up but if you search yahoo and search on kd 2398 and read through some of the sites i found one for 75.00 i desided to make my own also www.mscdirect.com has a clutch spring compressor in their catalog for like 20.88 plus shipping part#40601239 the lip seal kit are like 80 bucks they should be used in rebuild so you dont have problems
