I didn’t see any reverse light blink before he shut it off so I’m guessing it was left in drive and not actually a parking pawl failure. But yes, consistent use of the “parking brake” would have prevented this mishap.
Seriously though, I always left all my manual transmission vehicles in gear when parked because you never know when a parking brake might fail too. If it was a track vehicle that had just come in from some laps and the brakes were hot, then the vehicle got parked in gear and the wheels were chocked, leaving the parking brake disengaged so the pads wouldn’t burn themselves on the hot rotor. The point is to never have a situation where a single point of failure can cause your vehicle to drift away unexpectedly.
My take on this is even funnier if you knew what I did for a living. Sorry, can’t say though.
I have had issues in the past with sticking “parking brakes”. Especially with higher mileage and rarely driven vehicles. It has kinda made me gun shy. Yep I could fix them, but they seem to stick unexpectedly at the most inconvenient times. The pawl will hold my stuff under most normal conditions and I reserve the E brake for emergency situations.
Now back when I had the OBS with the ZF the brake was used frequently during trailer connection timing.
P-brake or E-brake, it is what it is...
You forget, I DO KNOW what you do for a living... We have had this conversation on the phone before...
They only stick until you burn them up... Then, they will be new or non-functioning.
All good @RacinJasonWV and when we are laughing about this over a cold beverage at the PA GTG, it will be good times.

Yes, when parked with engine off, the truck is in L or R. Same with the manual transmission cars we have owned. I just look at the P-brake (not E-brake) as a means to ease stress on the transmission, be it automatic or manual. If the P-brake happens to slip or fail, then the transmission will stop the vehicle from rolling away and stopping abruptly.

Old geezers call them emergency brakes, youngsters don't know any better and call them parking brakes.
As for making the cable brake work again...In addition to the aforementioned cable chafes on the frame, there are actuator assemblies in the back plate of the brake system, which rust fast and will result in the cable brakes not working. To get to them, you have to tear the brakes apart and either replace them or work on them to get them functional.

Oh yes I knew that you know but others don’t. Am I correct in it makes it all the more ironic?
And I hope the E vs P came across as funny. That was the intent. Although it was the truth as I must be an old geezer since it truly is an E brake to me.

Convincing argument. You may persuade me to come to the light side eventually.

That's why Audis have electric parking brakes.

What is the age cutoff for "youngster"? I took an "are you a millenial" test a few years ago with a few other SNCO's and the closer to 50 you were a millennial. I scored a 4... Yes four...

Yes, entertaining and ironic to say the least. It did and does come across as funny Jason.

How many times did you have to type that out before you were happy with it?

As do some other makes. Which I believe may have a lot to do with people doing things like seen in your video. Can’t roll away due to forgetting to put in park if the PARKING brake comes on itself…
