Hey Y'all, ive have my 1992 F-150 4.9L EFI 2WD for almost a year now and just recently its been having starting issues, The biggest issue is that the truck will crank super slow when it gets up to temperature. Ive replaced the starter, and ignition solenoid on the fender and it has a newer battery with plenty of CCA's and it's the right size. But when i go to start it, it just turns over super slow, i've looked through the forums and most i can tell everyone says new solenoid or starter but i've already replaced those and it's still having the same issue. The other issue is that it wont turn over with the key, the key will work fine in the ignition barrel and i can turn the key to the starting position and it puts a draw on the battery so i know the key is sending power out but i dont know if it's getting stopped on its way to the solenoid, ive checked all wires from the solenoid to the starter and even put a new chasis ground to both but its still having the same two issues, ive replaced the fender solenoid twice and ive rewired the terminals, the only way i can get it to start is by jumping the fender solenoid and then when the truck is warm it will crank very slow and after a few seconds the wires on the battery will start to smoke a bit so that makes me think bad ground but im pretty sure ive checked all grounds, any info or knowledge is helpful and appreciated, thanks. -Owen
I had a '88 that would turn over Slowly when hot with the AC on. Turn the AC off and it would turn over fine. Just something to try.
It does it with the AC off aswell, it's definitely a sketchy thing to drive too considering it's a manual, and if i stall in traffic i have to wait for it to cool down before it can start again
Have you checked the ignition timing? I believe it should be ten degrees BTDC and if it was too far advanced you would experience pinging under quick acceleration. If it is set correct I would try retarding it about 5 degrees to see if it helps.
You would still need to get it to crank over from inside the cab, if all else fails I would rig up a push button starter switch.
