Is this a common failure of the 6.7? Been seeing a lot of threads about upper oil pan gasket leaks.

I guess I am fortunate, my 2015 with 80K miles has no oil leak, original radiator, and no coolant leak at the turbo..........yet.

It is, there is no gasket, just Permatex. I personally think it's too much crankcase pressure building up.

Did they change this starting with the 20's? According to the coffee table book, page 24, there is an upper oil pan gasket.

Yep, and apparently it is not backwards compatible.
